What is a typical acupuncture session like?

Every new patient will have an initial 90 minute session where we go through a full health history screening and assess your goals. You then receive a full acupuncture treatment during this initial session. Each session thereafter will consist of a 60 minute treatment.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture needles are inserted into specific points on the body that stimulate nerves under the skin. This wakes up the nervous system and stimulates the brain to initiate biochemical responses in other parts of the body. Examples: Endorphin release to alleviate pain; Endocrine stimulation to balance hormones; Neurotransmitter release to improve mood and affect sleep; Blood flow to the area to bring more nutrients and oxygen & disease fighting white blood cells.

Does Buffalo Metropolitan Acupuncture accept insurance?

We can provide patients with a superbill to submit to their insurance company. We recommend reaching out to your insurance company to explore your coverage options.

What does it feel like?

Since we use small-gauged needles, patients often don’t realize that the needle has been inserted. Sometimes you may feel a slight pinch upon insertion. Once the needles are in you shouldn’t feel any discomfort. The needle site may feel heavy or warm, which is a desirable result, as that means blood flow is increasing to that area.

What should I wear?

Comfortable, loose fitting clothes. We recommended wearing or bringing a tank top and shorts. We properly drape as needed to access areas under clothing if required for treatment. We can modify treatments as needed to provide a comfortable and safe environment for all patients.

Is acupuncture safe while pregnant?

Yes. Please let us know if you are pregnant or trying to conceive. Some acupuncture points and adjunctive therapies are not advised during pregnancy.

How many sessions will I need?

The duration of treatment is impacted by many variables. Typically, acute conditions can be treated within 1-4 sessions. Chronic conditions usually require 4-8 sessions. Each patient is unique and will be provided with a more specific treatment plan during the initial session. In addition, many patients choose to receive acupuncture treatments 1-2 times per month as part of their regular wellness routine.
